Yesterday the temperature was on 32 ºC. Today seems is going to be hotest than today but when this happends I going to be in my beloved Bogota city.
I came to Barrancabermeja to give a talk about open soure software on the first Encuentro Regional de Territorios digitales del Magdalena Medio. So the talk takes 2 hours and was really amazing to talk to the people about this topic with more experience than other thing. At the end of the talk all the paople received a CD with OpenApps and gone with the idea to try Open Source software at house, school and work.
After the congress end time to tourism and see:

2010 was my second year as installation coordinator of FLISoL Bogota. Bogota city FLISoL is one of the biggest events in all latinamerica, with a lot of people, aa lot of activities and a lot of installations. This responsability was taken again on the final meeting of FLISoL 2009. Today I feel I do a great job and propose a procedure to this important area on FLISoL and other events.
I have some fails, one of them was the imposibility to setup Flisys, with the special changes made by Edmundo Cardona. I feel for fist time in a long time that Internet network works fine, at least on installation arena. I feel the networking desing and deployment was good. The treatment with people was good and there was a good communication between the installers and the pc owners.
There’s a lot of ideas, learning and experience not only for this kind of activities, I mean, a lot of things for the life, and proffesionally, things to be a good CIO. Today a lot of people realiced about how big is this kind of activities, how much time it involve, how much of you this need. So, this is my last year as installation area leader. I have to give the oportunity to new people to learn and improve what we’ve done.
My special thanks to Ruri Himura for his help on 2010 FLISoL. Kortux for his help on 2009 FLISoL. Diana Posada and my aunt Befana for support all my angers and crazy requeriments. Diego Guerrero for his experience and help on 2010 FLISoL. To the distro teams and of course, all the installers and people who allow us to instal open source software on they machines.

Information grow every day, sometimes grow with exponential behaviors. It’s true, today cost of storage devices and solutions have become lower, but the information will be growing more and more. There’s a solution, file compression. Some examples of compression: Backups, logs, dead files and everything you don’t have to access constantly. Mi favorite compression algorithm is 7z. I have done a lot of test with 7z and the results have been really good. But, the file compression it’s a old topic, so, before do it, I suggest to think about::
This 3 points are really important, because maybe you need to recover a backup on a critical situation and well, it takes 1 hour or more. This could be really bad. So please choose well is compress files o not and how to do it.

When you’re a sysadmin and have to manage comunication systems, servers, critical apps and more. There’s a need for a system or systems to monitor the correct work of them. But, the real question is: How to monitor or what tools use to do it? So, here’s a list of open source software to do several montoring task.
1. Network monitor: Evaluate use of network, bandwith, traffic from some host MRTG and NTOP
2. Intruders detection: Identify possible intruders on the network or attacks to the servers or clients: SNORT – OSSEC
3. Monitoring servers and services : Check each n minutes or time if servers and the services are working OK: NAGIOS – CACTI – ZENOSS
With this tools you can start the monitoring system and notice when the things goes bad. For example you can receive a SMS notification using NAGIOS or CACTI with MUNIN. There are a lot of tools to use and become a informed sysadmin.
